11 Web companies on the brink?
Looking inward from the widening global economic crisis, we can see in our backyard several companies that we love, that are even popular, but that are badly exposed to a contracting economy. Web start-ups that haven't started beta-testing their business models or that are relying on advertising from the hardest-hit industries -- travel, finance, real estate -- are in danger. I've listed 11 companies that I worry over. Most of them I like, and I want to succeed. But that's not enough to make it so.

Google Maps gets cool GeoEye photos

The first high-resolution photos from GeoEye's newest satellite, GeoEye-1, have begun arriving, and Kutztown University in Pennsylvania is the first subject of scrutiny. Check out the shots that eventually will show up on Google Maps and Google Earth. The satellite's camera can capture image details as small as 41 centimeters.  Read more 
Yahoo Calendar gets an upgrade

Yahoo began a beta test of a major overhaul of its online calendar Wednesday, a redesign that brings new advertising and social-networking possibilities. The new site brings a more polished Web 2.0 interface, with drag-and-drop abilities, color-coded entries, Flickr image backdrops, and a slick "zoom" feature that expands a single day's schedule to a usefully large size when browsing in the monthly view.  Read more 
Zoho Mail: Mobile, offline, and out of beta

Zoho made some significant changes to a core part of its cloud-based application suite Friday: its online mail application now works offline and with Apple's iPhone, and the beta test is now publicly available.  Read more
