Windows Live gets more social

 Microsoft is announcing a series of changes to its Windows Live services aimed to give more of a social-networking flavor to the company's communications services.    With the update, Spaces, Windows Live Hotmail, and Windows Live Messenger will get deeper ties with one another. While stressing that it is not trying to create a new social-networking site, Microsoft is nonetheless adopting concepts like news feeds and profiles that have made such services so popular.

A scientific formula for Digg popularity

Bernardo Huberman, Hewlett-Packard's director of the HP Social Computing lab, and fellow researcher Gabor Szabo have published a highly detailed report (PDF) on "predicting the popularity of online content." Focusing on content submitted and popularized on popular social sites Digg.com and Google's YouTube, the two concocted not one, but three ways to predict how much traffic and overall user interaction a story or submitted video will receive well after it hits its initial popularity.  Read more 
OpenSocial turns one, previews version 0.9

On Thursday MySpace hosted a developer event in its San Francisco offices to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the OpenSocial application platform. Google took the chance to discuss plans for the upcoming 0.9 version of OpenSocial, which will feature a huge number of changes under the hood--many of which will improve the speed and overall efficiency of hosted apps.  Read more 
Web-based Office to work on Macs, iPhone

A Microsoft blog reiterated this week that the Web-based version of Office won't be tied to either Windows or Internet Explorer. In a blog posting on its Channel 10 site, a Microsoft blogger noted that, owing to support of Firefox and Safari, the forthcoming Office Web Applications will run on Linux and the iPhone.  Read more
